For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.

Open a command window executing a command leaving window up

net statistics server | more

Open a command window executing a command closing window
cmd /c commandhere
ex: cmd /c ipconfig>C:\ipconfig.txt (saves ipconfig to ipconfig.txt then closes cmd window)

Run a program as another user
runas /user:domain\username appname
ex: runas /user:jeffk cmd.exe
Tip: it’s useful to open a cmd.exe and run all your commands from this cmd.exe as all children will be ran with it’s credentials. Then just goto task manager and right click the cmd.exe and kill the tree so you don’t leave any privledged programs up

Tip2: Since you can’t do a runas on explorer.exe you can run internet explorer with runas credentials and then type the path in like C: in the location bar you then are effectively in a runas of explorer

Note: You must have the Secondary Logon Service on for this to work

Reset a local users Password:
net user USERNAME *
ex: net user jeffk *

Remote Desktop into Console of specific computer
Mstsc /v:computername /console
Ex: mstsc /v:deserver /console

Map a network Drive
Net use drivename: \\server\share
Net use z: \\daserver\music

Force network credentials
Net use \\server\sharename /user:domain\user
Ex: net user \\daserver\music /user:jeffk
Tip: Before using this you may want to issue net use * /d to delete previously stored credentials, or you can view your credentials by just typing net use

Find Current Hostname
In cmd.exe type hostname
Tip:use cmd /k hostname from run

Windows Key Shortcuts

Windows+E (Explorer)

Misc Shortcuts
\ - When typed at the Run dialog brings you to your root drive.
Home/End - Begining/End of line, not really a shortcut but overlooked
Ctrl+Home/End - Position the cursor to the very first/last position in the file.
F2 – Rename A file (while file is selected)
F3 Open Search/Find
Shift+F5 (Refresh Page and Cache in IE)
F4 Pull down drop down list in explorer

Ctrl+G Takes you to a specific line in notepad

Regjump from sysinternals (jumps you to a specific key in the registry)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Miscellaneous/Regjump.mspx
Put regjump.exe in your %windir%\system32 folder…
Start>run regjump keyname
Ex: regjump hklm\software

Environmental Variables (use these at start>run to quickly goto or anywhere in explorer) (Also see This)
Tip: Type set to see your variables
%windir%
%systemdrive%
%appdata%
%userprofile%
%programfiles%
%allusersprofile%

Start>Run>system or Start>Run>system32 {enter} to bring up the corresponding folder

Tip: Sadly some people don’t know that when asked to save you can type in a drive letter or an environmental variable and press enter it’ll take you to that folder/drive then you can specify a filename to save.

Tip2: When Saving a file if you type the filename in quotes it doesn’t matter what you select in the drop down list to save as so put like “blah.cmd” in notepad when saving it and it’ll save it as .cmd not .txt without having to select *.* from the drop down

Tip3: In explorer when saving or opening you can filter them by typing *.extension. For example to view only mp3 files type *.mp3 and press enter

Tip4:
In explorer make sure one icon is selected then just start typing the filename and it’ll take you to it.

Tip5: The icons in the top left of the title bar in explorer are fully functional, so if you right click it you’ll have the same options as if you’d right click the folder up a level.

Creating A Bootable WinPE 2.0 USB Key

Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE) 2.0 is a slimed down version of Windows (hence all the MiniNT references) that used to be the exclusive domain of OEM's providers. Microsoft has wisely chosen to offer this to the masses as part of the Windows AIK. USB keys can be found just about anywhere these days for next to nothing. Combine the capabilities of WinPE with the portability of a USB key and you just made a very powerful troubleshooting, imaging, and data recovery tool. Here is a quick step by step on how to do just that:

Step 1. ) Get USB Key

You probably already have a few and if not you can purchase these just about anywhere, so I won't tell you where to get one. You should get a USB 2.0 device of at least 512mb in size, but if you plan on putting a lot into a custom PE install or plan on using it to transfer data too then you are better served getting a larger size (2.0-4.0GB)

Step 2.) Download and Install the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK)

This deployment oriented tool set contains Windows PE 2.0.

Step 3.) Format the USB key

Note: This must be done from Windows Vista

Start a command prompt and run the following. This set of commands assumes your USB key is detected as disk 1, you should double check that by doing a list of the disks before cleaning it. If you have multiple hard drives you could end up wiping your second drive using this command. You have been warned.

  • Diskpart

  • select disk 1

  • clean

  • create partition primary

  • select partition 1

  • active

  • format fs=fat32

  • assign

  • exit

Step 4.) Setup Windows PE

  • In this step you will create and customize WinPE for your disk. From the machine that you installed the Windows AIK go to the start menu and select "Windows PE Tools Command Prompt" from under the Windows AIK program folder.

  • Run Copype.cmd x86 c:\winpe_x86

    • you can create an 64-bit version by changing the architecture from x86 to amd64

  • Add customizations to WinPE

    • copy any tools you want available to the C:\winpe_x86\iso folder such as imaging tools if you want to use this for capturing images (imagex, wimscript.ini)

Step 5 .) Copy Windows PE to USB Key

Insert the USB key into the machine that you have WinPE on and run the following command to copy the contents to the USB Key

xcopy c:\winpe_x86\iso\*.* /s /e /f e:\

change c: to reflect the drive your files on and e: to be your USB key.

There you have it...a quick way to make a handy USB version of WinPE that you can take with you anywhere. These can be used in almost any modern computer that supports USB booting.

Launchy: The Open Source Keystroke Launcher for Windows

Launchy is a free windows utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.

Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!

Once Launchy has been started, it hides in the background. You bring it forward by holding the alt key and tapping the space key. You then type in a few keys of the program you are searching for and hit enter once it has been found. You can also make Launchy dissappear again by hitting escape or alt+space.
